As the year winds down, and temperatures get colder, the holidays can be a stressful time. Perhaps that frustration starts when stores start offering out their Christmas decorations in August.  However, you don’t have to be Buddy the Elf to start feeling better about the season.

A recent study showed that donating to charity can help to reduce stress.

Elizabeth Dunn, a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia, noted that people who give money to charity tend to be happier.  She noted experiments in which people were given money. The subject could spend the money on themselves or other people. Those that gave it to others, were happiest. With happiness, also comes a health benefit. Her study showed that donating to charity lowers blood pressure.  “Money doesn’t seem to buy quite as much happiness as many people assume,” she said.

Fortunately, this is also the season in which many foundations will provide opportunities to be charitable. For example, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Perhaps one could choose to raise awareness by participating in a 5K, volunteering, or donating to a cause and wearing pink.
